ICW Conference Call - An Opportunity for Reform
Date: Wednesday, April 14
Time: 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. ET
Dial in # (866) 238-1665
The U.S. Department of Education has been busy lately churning out new guidelines, applications, and blueprints on various education matters. Lately, we have seen the Department’s announcement of Race to the Top Phase 1 winners, the Investing in Innovation (i3) grant application, and the Blueprint for Education Reform: Reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
Hear from both Frederick (Rick) M. Hess, resident scholar and director of education policy with the American Enterprise Institute and Michael J. Petrilli, vice president of national programs and policy with the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, on the latest efforts by the Administration to introduce more competitive funding into the K-12 education system, create a common set of voluntary standards across the states, provide opportunities to reward excellent and effective teaching, plus a lot more.
In addition, Mr. Hess will provide an overview of his recent book Education Unbound: The Promise and Practice of Greenfield Schooling. Using examples of organizations and individuals who are finding promising ways to address our nation’s education needs, Hess argues that the “key to breakthrough school improvement is not mandating new solutions built on an elusive combination of the right standards, pedagogy, and assessments, but on removing entrenched bureaucratic barriers and rethinking restrictive norms and routines.”
Speakers include:
- Frederick (Rick) M. Hess, director of education policy, American Enterprise Institute
- Michael J. Petrilli, vice president of national programs and policy, Thomas B. Fordham Institute
