From the Boardroom to the School Board: Why Business Engagement in School Governance is Important

ICW and NCF will release a report that features thirteen school board case studies that will provide a deeper understanding of school board composition, oversight, and priorities. In addition, the work will address the impact of different state and local laws on school governance. The thirteen case studies will analyze general findings on the composition, structure, and authority of school boards.

School Board Case Studies

School boards can be responsible for everything from approving performance evaluation systems, hiring district leadership, and negotiating union contracts, to developing and enforcing budgets. Their decisions have consequences for local school systems, but there is limited information available about how they function. Now, given the recent trend toward increased local control, school boards are likely to have increased authority over accountability decisions in the future.

Education's Impact on the Utah Economy

Over 100,000 Utahns awoke this morning ready to work but had no job to go to. Ironically, in a time of high unemployment, many Utah businesses have jobs they cannot fill simply because workers with the right education and skills are not available. Education plays a critical role in our recovery from the longest, widest and deepest recession since the Great Depression and it is the key to long-term prosperity.
